Thiamine is a water soluble, non-toxic B vitamin (B-1) which plays essential roles in the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids. The result is energy from the metabolism of amino acids which maintains a healthy antioxidant system. Thiamine is very important for a healthy brain and nervous system where it maintains energy production, neurotransmitter balance, and overall nerve cell function. In the market place there are many brands of Thiamine supplements that have different bioavailability. The brands include but are not limited too: Thiamine, which is only 10% absorbed (B-6 Thiamine hydrochloride), Benfotiamine, which is manufactured for high absorption rate, and lastly Allithiamine TTFD (derived from denatured Garlic).
The best analogy of the Thiamine function would be synonymous to ‘the on-time hardware needed in the assembly of a car’. B-1 is used in every human cell (we have approximately 30 to 40 trillion cells), and in every cell there are microscopic energy factories called mitochondria with anywhere from 2 to 1,000 per cell. When studied closely, you can derive how critical B-1 is needed for overall energy. B-1 is the first step in conversion of glucose to energy inside the mitochondrial fluid. Without a timely supply of B-1, the human body slows down and starts to malfunction.
Thiamine derives usable energy from dietary fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids (protein). B-1 is involved in a multitude of complex chemical reactions. Using dietary components to build and maintain our cells also requires us to modify and process these molecules. To accomplish this task, the human body uses approximately 7,800 or so enzymes from all the essential B vitamins and micronutrients-like minerals called cofactors. This process is classified as a biochemical construct with constitutes that range from simple enzyme snippets to complex hormones.
At this point the nervous system, which was built and maintains bio-chemically transmitted electrical impulses, communicates with specialized cell groups throughout the body, which includes fairly complex biology.
Inside the mitochondrial fluid, dietary Thiamine performs a cofactor dance with magnetic precision; but first it must be processed and activated by phosphorylation inside cells to Thiamine Pyrophosphate (TPP), then to ATP (energy). This process concludes Thiamines important function in complex human physiology.
